Entering college creates a new stage in people’s lives that often seems like a great way to grow. For example, I often hear college gives people a sense of freedom and individuality, but such individuality also allows freedom in what individuals eat. I more often observe fast-food diets with people I spent time with. Such observation created the question of what is the food diet college students partake in during college?
Have you heard of the Freashemn 15? well, that’s the belief that new freshmen tend to gain around 15 pounds of weight their first year due to eating habits. This belief is controversial since studies on such topics tend to fluctuate, yet the idea of what college students eat tends to be poor dietary choices. It has been found by NYU, that students in their campus who are 3–4 months in college, gain an average of 1.5–6.8 lb. It was also found that a majority of young adults consume less than 1 serving/day of fruit. Those are just a few examples of what college students dietary habbit are.
Having a good dietary habit is something that I would encourage people to do. The first step could be by taking advantage of campus services. Many campuses include nutrition facts to provide students with information on what exactly they are intaking. For example, Lawry dining hall in the College of Wooster provided the nutrition facts right next to the food stands. Such a campus provides a well-balanced diet for each student. Whether the students enjoy the food is a different story, but understanding what you eat is important. The next step would be to understand nutrition to move along with college life with good dietary habits.
